Nobel Peace Prize 2023 Awarded to ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ Activist Narges Mohammadi

Socialist International Women (SIW) congratulates Narges Mohammadi on being awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. Narges is an imprisoned Iranian human rights activist who has campaigned tirelessly for women’s rights and democracy in Iran and who is a supporter of the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ peaceful movement.

Narges is currently serving multiple sentences of around 12 years in prison and has suffered and endured other cruel and inhuman punishments including 154 lashes.

Despite all the suffering and unjust imprisonment, Narges continues to campaign and fight for freedom, democracy and equality in Iran. Her determination, courage and risking her life for freedom is a true inspiration to all of us around the world.

We take this opportunity to commend the Nobel Peace committee for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Narges as this sends a strong and clear message to the Iranian authorities that their injustices will not go unnoticed.

We also call upon the international community, the United Nations and governments around the world to support the people of Iran and hold the Iranian regime accountable for their crimes and atrocities committed against its own people.

SIW stand in solidarity with the people of Iran, with Narges Mohammadi and with the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ movement and calls for the immediate release of Narges and of all other women and men unjustly imprisoned for their peaceful demonstrations against this brutal regime.
